What to plant after spinach

The short answer

After spinach in June the bed can take French or runner beans, beetroot, carrots, kale, pointed cabbage, broccoli or sweetcorn, as well as quick salads. Vercro marks nothing to wait.

Spring spinach often runs to seed as the days lengthen, so the bed is free by early summer with most of the season ahead.

Spinach cleared in June

What Vercro's catalogue has in its sowing window when the bed clears in mid June, checked against spinach with the same code as the Vercro app. No frost date is applied here; “ready about” counts the catalogue's growing time from mid June.

Why the family matters

Spinach is in the beet and chard family (Amaranthaceae), with beetroot and chard. Vercro raises no rotation warning for this family, because it holds no documented soil problem that builds up from repeating it.

We found no reputable source giving a specific rotation rule for this family. What the family does share is a pest: the RHS notes chard and beetroot share beet leaf miner. That is a reason to watch, not a soil problem.

Worth knowing about spinach beds

  • Beetroot is a relative

Following spinach with beetroot or chard is the same family. Vercro doesn’t warn, but you may prefer variety.
  • A long season ahead

A June bed can take a main summer crop, not only a quick one.
  • Autumn spinach later

The catalogue has autumn spinach sown in August and September. It can go here or elsewhere.
  • What we don’t know

Whether rotation matters much for this family is not something the RHS addresses. We say so rather than invent a rule.

Check it for your bed and your frost date

Pick when it came out and add your usual first frost (or your postcode). The tool opens with your answer.

Your usual first autumn frost (optional)The date you usually expect the first frost where you grow. Enter it yourself, or look it up by postcode.

How Vercro handles this in a real garden

When a spinach planting ends in Vercro, the Garden plan lists what could go into the space, checked against your location's frost date.

What this page can't tell you

The honest limits

Sowing months are a national calendar, not your garden's. We can't see your soil, how much room is left, or what else is still growing in the bed. The rotation check looks only at spinach; your bed's earlier history matters too.

Where this comes from

Crop windows, growing times and plant families come from Vercro's own curated crop catalogue, the same data the Vercro app uses. Where a published source says something different, we show both rather than choosing the convenient one. Reviewed 19 September 2026.

Let each empty bed tell you what could go in

In the Vercro Garden plan, a bed that has come free shows what could go there next, using your location's frost date and what that bed has grown before.
