What can I plant after potato?

Tell us what came out of the bed, when, and roughly when your first autumn frost comes. You get what can still go in and finish in time, what should wait because of what grew there, and what we can't judge.

Where you're sowing
Your usual first autumn frost (optional)The date you usually expect the first frost where you grow. Enter it yourself, or look it up by postcode.

After potato, sowing on 27 October

Potato is in the potato and tomato family (Solanaceae). Growing that family here again soon matters because potato cyst nematode (eelworm) eggs can survive in soil for up to ten years, and blight carries over in potatoes left in the ground.

Add your usual first frost above (or look it up by postcode) to see which will finish in time. Without it we can only say what is in its sowing window.

In its sowing window (10)

Add your first frost date to see which of these will finish in time.

What this knows, and what it doesn't

  • Two checks, both from the Vercro app. Timing is the Garden plan's own “What could go here” test. Rotation is the app's bed-history check, by botanical family.
  • Rotation looks at the last crop only. In your own garden Vercro reads the bed's whole history. Here it only knows what you told it.
  • “Follows well” has one meaning. Hungry crops after peas or beans, which leave some nitrogen in the soil. It is modest, not a feed.
  • Sowing months are national. Your frost date is the only local input. Shorter autumn days slow growth, which the growing times don't model.
  • It can't see the bed. Room, soil, and what is still growing alongside are not known here. Greenhouse and polytunnel use a general speed-up figure.

In your own garden, Vercro does this bed by bed

When a bed clears in the Garden plan, Vercro offers what could go there next, using your location's frost date and what that bed has grown before.
